Hi there, my name is Tommy Camino and I am a rising sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh! I’m from Wexford, Pennsylvania right outside of Pittsburgh so I like to consider myself a “yinzer”. I am currently a student at the College of Business Administration at Pitt, planning on pursuing majors in Marketing and Supply Chain Management, as well as a certificate in Leadership and Ethics. After nearly two semesters in the books I can guarantee that coming to Pitt and becoming a member of Pitt Business were two of the best decisions I have ever made! Aside from being a Pitt Business student, I also am a member of Phi Beta Lambda, a professional business organization on campus, and a proud member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. One of the things that attracted me the most to Pitt Business was the Plus 3 program for freshman and now I am excited to say that I will be participating in Plus 3: Buenos Aires, Argentina!
One of the things that excites me most about going to Argentina is that this will be my first time in South America. Growing up I had taken vacations to the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Turks and Caicos. Going to Argentina will be very exciting as I step out of my comfort zone of just traveling internationally to beaches and now I’m headed to the city of Buenos Aires. In Buenos Aires my peers and I will be studying Global Health and the diverse healthcare system of Argentina. A reason for choosing the Bueno Aires program aside from never being to South America was that I had always been curious to see how business and health practices work together. This especially interests me after seeing how Argentina uses several different styles of health care for its citizens within its public and private hospitals. I am also extremely excited to try some of the food in Argentina, especially the steak and other grilled meats the country is famous for. One of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh is Gaucho, which is an Argentinian restaurant that has some of the best steak around. I have my hopes set that the steak in Argentina will blow Gaucho away!
Throughout my journey in Argentina I personally hope to step outside my comfort zone and thrive in another country while not on a vacation. I hope that my love of travel will grow and that I can use this opportunity to soak up as much culture as I can whether it be through food, art, or just making conversation with locals. Academically, I hope that seeing how global health works in a foreign country that maybe I could consider it as a potential career path or just the healthcare or pharmaceutical industry in general. Professionally, I hope that being in a foreign country working with my project team will allow myself to thrive in adversity and I hope to also develop my international business skills because as the world globalizes, I could find myself working with people from all over the world someday. Well I hope I’m going to have some good stories to tell in the weeks to come (hopefully some funny ones). Until next time friends. Stay classy.
