Breaking Out of Charlotte

Our little detour here in Charlotte has presented us with a lot of team building opportunities, one of which was an escape room. Yesterday we went to Breakout in order to get to know each other a bit more and practice our teamwork skills. My team consisted of Lacey, Chad, Carlye and Torrey, in addition to myself.

Our room was Mystery Mansion. The task: to uncover the secrets of a haunted manor and lift the curse. We had an hour to move through three rooms and try to solve the mystery.

This is not my first time doing an escape room, and I have to admit, they aren’t my favorite activity. I’m not a big puzzle fan, and riddles frustrate me. Still, it was really cool to see how our team worked together to solve problems. Everyone stepped up to the plate and it was evident how the team’s different strengths contributed to solving the mystery.

I really enjoyed learning what the top StrengthsFinder strengths are for my team because it was very easy to see how they came into play while we were trying to get out of the escape room.

Lacey’s communication strength was evident whenever a clue was found- she made sure that everyone was aware of it. Chad demonstrated his focus strength the whole time, but especially towards the end, when the task involved keeping track of numbers. Carlye’s adaptability strength was really helpful whenever we reached a dead end and had to start from square one. And Torrey utilized his strategic strength by linking clues together which helped keep us all on track.

As for me, I’d say that my top strength, futuristic, was most useful to the team. I tried to always think of what the next step could be and attempted to keep tabs on any clues that might benefit us in the future.

Even though escape rooms aren’t my cup of tea, I still had a lot of fun. We didn’t end up escaping, but we got pretty close- only two more steps and we would’ve made it! Our team was able to work together, and I think that, as a whole, everyone on the trip got a lot closer.

Now, let’s breakout of Charlotte and escape to Dublin!
