Cuando está en Costa Rica… beba café

Although made in Costa Rica, Café Britt coffee is not particularly popular among Ticos.  Café Britt focuses on creating gourmet coffee while being environmentally friendly and sustainable. Ticos normally do not drink coffee from Café Britt because it is very expensive. Most of the gourmet coffee is advertised to other countries and then the lower quality coffee is sold locally in markets.

In terms of the coffee supply chain, Café Britt is the manufacturer / distributor. They purchase coffee beans from local farmers and then prepare and roast the coffee. Once the coffee is roasted, Café Britt then packages it and then sells it to their customers. On the contrary, Doka Estate is seen as a supplier in the coffee supply chain. They grow coffee plants and harvest the cherries and then distribute them to buyers who then prepare and roast the coffee beans.

Overall, Café Britt uses a lot of strategies that contributes to their financial success, especially when considering the production of their coffee. The few strategies that stuck our to me were producing coffee in the countries where they sell it and to produce their chocolates in house. Currently, Café Britt is located in 5 other countries besides Costa Rica. In each location, they produce coffee that are popular in that country, reducing the shipping cost and creating more types of coffee blends. Not only does Café Britt sell coffee, they also sell chocolates and cookies. In order to maintain control of the quality of their chocolates and cookies, they make everything in house and even have a chocolate factory down the road from Café Britt. Although they produce coffee local to each country, Café Britt manufactures all the chocolate in Costa Rica and then exports it to other countries since it is such a tedious process.

If I were to do anything differently, I would try to make Café Britt more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Although they are working towards becoming carbon neutral and trying to create packaging that is biodegradable, Café Britt could be doing more in the refining process. At Doka Estate, their coffee mills use water to operate, not electricity. If Café Britt wants to become more sustainable, that would be another great way to start.
