We started our second day by doing as everyone should, enjoying an amazing breakfast. We then got dressed in our business casual attire for the day and made our way over to the UEF (University of Economics and Finance) to hear a presentation about the Mekong River Delta and how the people who utilize it for work and play, are factors for its success in the future. The Mekong River Delta is a huge part in the trade, economy, and environment in Southern Vietnam and creates a great area for local farmers and sales people to support their families and keep their family traditions alive. We then moved on to another Vietnamese language lesson and left the school as it was time for lunch. Today’s lunch was at a restaurant called Tokyo Deli, and we were seated at tables where we had to sit on the ground to eat. The food was very good yet interesting at the same time, but I am always excited to try new foods! Lastly, we moved on to our first company site visit of the trip. The business that we toured today was Phu My Hung, who’s vision plan is to build a new, sustainable, and clean city in Southern Saigon. A large part of their business is building housing for people who live in the area, and anyone who decides to move in the area. As we drove to the company’s site, there was a very distinct difference between where the people who didn’t live in Phu My Hung’s housing, and those who did. We learned that a lot of where Phu My Hung operates was once a site of heavy fighting in the Vietnam War, so it has taken them a lot of time to transform this area into a more modern city. Because of this drastic change, the target market for their housing is middle to upper class and creates a visible divide in those who live among the tall buildings that Phu My Hung has built. Also, due to the war and the now communist government, there are some obstacles with trying to develop a brand-new city. The company must confirm with the government before making any changes to the area and had to even get a full masterplan confirmed back in 1993 before they were able to start their first project. After seeing their vision first hand, I am very excited to see how they achieve it and change the entire atmosphere of the area they work in.
