Understanding Hallyu at Hanyang University

“We make tomorrow.” While this phrase would accurately describe the technological drive and focus in Korean society, it is a motto specific to Hanyang University, a site which the Plus3 Korea Program was welcomed at today. A kind reception was provided by the office for international students, which included an overview of Hanyang’s history and current operations, a lecture from a professor about Korean culture, and a guided tour of the campus with students from the English language student organization. Hanyang University was founded by a musician that sought to introduce STEM to Korea, thus both the music and engineering programs are highly reputable and competitive for entrance. Hanyang University is home to the oldest engineering school in Korea, and used to refer to this core educational department as “The Engine of Korea.” Hanyang has since altered this motto as engines are being replaced with new technologies, describing the university’s role in innovation as going “Beyond the Engine.” This focus and resilience can be observed as a trend throughout Korean history, reflected in Korea’s defeat of invading forces in wars that date back to the Gojoseon Dynasty, and development of technologies like the Ondol floor heating system over a hundred years before areas of the Western World began to utilize this system. These advancements in Korean society are studied by students as interdisciplinary studies are required at Hanyang, allowing students to develop collaborative skills. An example of this is engineering students are required to take an engineering communications and engineering ethics course, which allows for these traditionally math and science focused students to experience humanities. The students I conversed with at Hanyang displayed great passion for their studies and pride in attending this prestigious educational institution. However, these students were eager to also learn about my life at the University of Pittsburgh. I appreciated the global mindset these students had in our interactions, and will be sure to maintain this focus myself both personally and professionally!
