The Korean people have a phrase that describes the fast-pace of both personal and professional life known as “pali-pali,” or “hurry hurry.” I adhered to this attitude as I had a “busy busy” agenda for the day, filled with a site visits to Samsung Biologics, Seoul City Hall, and Seoul Global Startup Center. Samsung Biologics is a leader in the drug industry, despite entering biologics only 8 years ago. I gained insight into the advanced technology that has been a catalyst to the success of this new Samsung division, which is primarily from Samsung’s extensive resources like engineering capabilities, but is also accredited to a high product demand. Facilities of Samsung Biologics have passed all inspections by both domestic and international regulatory bodies, allowing Samsung to meet the high consumer demand. Korea succeeds in meeting demands of consumers in numerous forums, including efforts to ensure the government is listening to citizens and meeting requests. This was evident today during the visit Seoul City Hall, wherein two government buildings were visited. Seoul’s City Hall had previously contained government offices in a hall built by Japan during the illegal annexation of Korea around WWI. Some present day Koreans recognized this site as a historic landmark, while other Koreans wanted a new City Hall that would encompass the Korean identity, and sought to take pride in developing a facility. Thus, the City of Seoul preserved the building constructed by Japan and made this a library, while also building a new hall for the citizens. Furthermore, The innovation reflected at Samsung Biologics and in Korean government expenditures was reflected in the visit to Seoul Global Startup Center, a government sponsored startup incubator specific to foreign business ventures. This site visit resonated with me strongly because it provided a realistic perspective regarding the challenges of entrepreneurship, but still conveyed an optimistic outlook about the prospect of creating “the next big thing.” While these site visits were comprised of unique industries, I took away the same lesson from all locations: do not fear innovation, even while taking consideration of complex environments.
