Operation: Karaoke (May 7)

Today started with a visit to Hanyang University. Hanyang is know for its engineering college and is considered in the top three universities in the country. When we arrived, we attended a presentation about the history of Korea and its culture. I found this lecture quite entertaining. The Koreans as a people have experienced a multitude of drawbacks, yet every time they bounce back even stronger. We then met up with some students who took us on a tour of the campus. The campus was beautiful, with many modern style buildings. One similarity to the University of Pittsburgh is that both have ridiculous hill on campus that make the walking that much more enjoyable!

The next stop on our agenda was a cooking class. We learned how to make Tteok-bokki, a version of rice cakes with mixed vegetables and chili sauce. I’m kind of a master chef, so naturally my meal was delicious (and probably the best in the class). The cooking itself was not too difficult, and only took about ten minutes.

That night, Dr. Yun took some of us out to eat traditional Korean food. He refused to tell us what our meal was until we were done. After devouring the delicious meal, he made us aware that its was octopus tentacles and cow intestines. I enjoyed those very much, and it was very nice of him to take us out.

As we were leaving the restaurant, some friends and I saw a karaoke club that we had to go to. We ended up getting a private room for 12 with a screen, party lights, microphones, and tambourines. We sung all types of Taylor Swift and Whitney Houston songs, and, of course, we finished the night off with the Korean classic Oppa Gangnam style. It was definitely a night to remember.
