Day three was another full day. Today we visited two very different companies. The first company we visited was Huawei. The building we visited today was very impressive. There were huge chandeliers and marble floors. When we walked into the building, we were greeted by a few ladies who gave us a tour of their products. Before we started the tour, however, they gave us little ear pieces to wear that allowed us to hear the lady giving the tour which was really neat! Huawei is a popular company in China. The main product they sell are smart phones. These smart phones have extremely high-tech cameras and technology in them. What was really interesting to learn about was the price for the phones. A phone made by Huawei is around $450 which is really cheap compared to the $1000 Apple phone. Along with smart phones they are very close to launching their new 5G service. The 5G service is said to be ten times faster than the current 4G service. They would be able to install this service just by adjusting the current 4G servers. During the tour, we were able to test out some of their future ideas which was really cool to see. After the tour, we went into a conference room to hear a little more about the company overall. We received tea during the presentation and then at the end during the questions they gave us fruit and dessert which was really good. When we were leaving the company, they gave all of us a gift which was really nice. They printed out a group picture we took when we got there and also gave us a book.
After the visit at Huawei we went to lunch. Lunch was in a gigantic mall. Aside from having to get up to the 8thfloor to find the restaurant, the food was delicious. One part of the meal that was really good was the yogurt we ate for dessert. It was my first-time trying yogurt here in China and it actually tasted really good. Finally, after lunch we made our way to our second company visit which was at VIPKid. VIPKid is a Chinese company that uses teachers in America to teach kids in China English. The interaction between the student in China and the teacher in America happens over video chat. This company is a relative new company, only being five years old. I found this company to be very interesting because it is giving back jobs to the US while helping kids in China learn English.
Finally, after the visit, we went back to the hotel and worked on our project before we went to dinner. We ate dinner in the hotel tonight. We all shared four different kinds of dumplings. After dinner we took the subway to Olympic Park. The subway was so much cleaner than the subways in the US. Also, to ride the subway is cheap compared to using it in the US. Walking around Olympic Park was very cool. The buildings were all lit up and there was so much activity going on around the different buildings. We traveled back to the hotel on the subway and went straight to bed.
