May 14th: The Monster Münster

Waking up, I knew I needed all the energy I could get. It was a big helping of fried bacon today. It was going to be a long uphill climb and I would need to persevere and fight through. We were headed to Ulm to take on the Münster. As soon as we got off the train in Ulm I was greeted by a few cranes for some massive construction project.

Not sure what it was but I realized that there’s a lot of construction in Germany, similar to the US. I also realize that they often restore their landmarks. A lot of the churches and other sites we’ve gone to have been under construction of some sort. Now, it was time for some early morning cardio. Steps upon steps, spiraling upwards was the challenge. Many people in our group were freaking out, however, I was excited. I started counting all the steps at the beginning but lost track around 45. Once we reached the top, it was 768. My legs were burning, but in front of me I saw miles and miles of land. I felt as if I could see the Earth curve in the distance.

View from the top

Once again I am stunned by the construction of centuries ago. The construction of the Münster was started in the 14th century and it took nearly five hundred years to complete. The way down may have been tougher. Spiraling and spiraling, if you fell you may have rolled all the way down. Once we hit the bottom it was time for a city tour. Guided by a man named David, we first started in the plaza near the Münster. I thought David gave an excellent tour. He was very passionate about the city of Ulm and also very knowledgeable.

The Münster

The tour ended with David leading us to where we were eating lunch. It was a lovely crepe/pancake place. I never knew there were so many different toppings for pancakes. I decided to go with a balsamic chicken and tomato pancake. It was so unusual but I liked it. Afterwards, cake was brought out to celebrate Eammon’s birthday. I don’t know who made the cake but it was amazing. It was like a strawberry cake and wow was it good. It definitely gave me the sugar kick I needed for the rest of the day.

After getting back to Augsburg, my group met to finalize our presentation. We feel really good about going into tomorrow! We have a lot of good information and are prepared. On the way back from the University, we stopped at an Irish pub named Murdock’s for dinner. Rumor was that they had amazing hamburgers. Rumors were confirmed. It was nice to get a hearty meal in before tomorrow. As I said, the group feels good and we’re hype going into gameday!

Highlight of the Day: Top of the Münster in Ulm.
