Across the Pond in Birmingham!

Hello there! My names is Connor Scott and I come from a town just north of Pittsburgh called Slippery Rock. I come from a family of four with six pets: two dogs and four cats! Some things I enjoy doing are playing video games, hanging out with my friends, and playing quidditch (yes, the sport from Harry Potter). I also serve as the incoming travel director for the Pitt Program Council here in Oakland as well! I am an upcoming sophomore at the Oakland campus. My major is history with a minor in education while on the pre-education trac here at Pitt. My plan for the future is to become a high school history teacher! I’ve always enjoyed history and I really enjoyed school growing up. Because of that, I would love to continue my work career in an environment that played a major role in my life!

My program this summer will be the Plus3 UK trip in Birmingham! A major factor into why I chose this particular program is the exposure to foreign education systems. When looking at scores for students in foreign countries and the US, there tends to be a trend of the US scoring lower compared to other European nations and a few nations in Asia as well. I think that, by looking at foreign education systems, we can help improve the education system here in the US by using what we will learn while we are in Birmingham. This exposure, I believe, can help improve the next generation of American student’s quality of education. While I’m over in the UK, I would like to see what parts of the British education system work the best so that, one day in my own classroom, I can use what I’ve learned to better my students as a whole. But, I want to also enjoy being in a foreign country and getting to see and do things someone here in the US might not be able to do!
