Many people know Costa Rica as a small piece of paradise and a wonderful vacation spot. From the beautiful beaches to the pristine forests and planation’s. This is all made possible by the amazing conservation efforts Costa Rica has.
Costa Rica consistently ranks within the top 20 globally in terms of environmental suitability, in line with countries like Australia, Brazil, and Qatar. What is even more impressive is the 99.2% usage of renewable energy. Nearly unheard of in the world today. Current President Carlos Alvarado Quesada is still keeping his goals high recently saying Costa Rica will implement “electrification of transport, smart and resilient cities, sound waste management, sustainable agriculture and improved logistics”.
They are one of the few countries whose citizens and politicians have come together to not only push for change but actually deliver on promises. The model Costa Rica has set forth is one to be both admired and used as a blueprint for other countries. Both from the perspective of politics and the actual implementation of plans.
For instance, a goal was set in 2015 to become carbon neutral by 2021. Despite the pandemic and various setbacks due to it, Costa Rica is nearly carbon neutral at this point. They plan on being just the third carbon negative country ever, in the very near future.
More focused towards tourists and outsiders is the “Rancho Mastatal” education center. It is more or less a farm/community established in 2001 with the goal of educating outsiders about the suitability efforts Costa Rica has implemented as well as all of natural beauty it has. Spread across 300 acres Rancho Mastatal has “waterfalls, beautiful rivers, swimming holes, hiking trails, lush greenery and ancient trees, and an abundance of animals”. Learning about sustainability efforts that can be seen in front of you is an extremely powerful tool, and Costa Rica is rightfully proud of it.
Seeing these conservation efforts, beautiful sights, and the people of Costa Rica (not the mention the amazing coffee) in person will be something truly amazing. Waiting for these next few days to pass is becoming harder and harder.
