After some sleep, we started off our first full day in Cyprus with the complementary hotel breakfast where there was a versatile coffee maker that could make all different types of coffee in seconds! Walking through Cyprus it is very clear that coffee is a big part of their culture. Afterwards, we began with a walk through of the New City. The New City was modern with unique architecture and a variety of establishments. On our way back to our hotel in the Old City, we were able to walk along the Venetian walls built long ago which is now combined with modern architecture which combines the New and Old City.
We took a break for lunch, and I was able to try different foods while also being surrounded by cats! One cat sat beside my chair for the duration of the meal resting on the ground. The food was very delicious and too much for me to finish. Following lunch, we visited the University of Nicosia where we had our orientation and were able to grab some snacks before seeing some of the nearby UNIC campus locations such as the dorms and a mall.
After a short break, we began on a tour of the Old City where we delved into some of the specifics of Cyprian architecture and history as well as learn about Cyprus’ stand on religion and more details on the relationship between Cyprus and Turkey. We were able to view churches, mosques, old schools, and the green line as well as see more cats along the way! 🙂 Once we finished our tour, we ended up at a tavern for a group family-style and classic Cyprus meal with many dishes to be shared amongst us all. No room was left in any stomachs, and I was able to taste some unique dishes I have never tried before. I’m ready to rest up and face tomorrow’s busy day to see what more I can learn and experience from Cyprus!
