Cabros, chocolate, y Café Britt

Todays adventure was based on Café Britt. It is a VERY high end coffee roaster here in Costa Rica. They position themselves as being high end and therefore not the first choice of most ticos. Instead opting for the tourists and foreign markets. Specially aiming to sell coffee to those who can afford a higher price point for higher quality such as the US and Canada.

The sourcing process for Café Britt is also an interesting discussion. They go to over 3000 different plantations to get the coffee beans. To assure the highest quality they test the coffee batches themselves. When dissatisfied with the sample sent by a plantation(which is often) they will request a sample of a different batch. This process will continue until they are satisfied with the beans they receive.

Café Britt serves a small portion of the coffee market which is why they must sell different things to survive. These include small arts and crafts gifts but especially the chocolate that they have. Arguably the most important product for their Costa Rican business. They have found success in this manner and it seems to be a model for long term success. Perhaps in the future they venture into buying and running their own plantations.
