Cypriot Businesses

Today was full of educational visits. We started the day by driving to Limassol, a city on the coast. In Limassol, we had a meeting with a pharmaceutical company named Medochemie. Medochemie is headquartered in Limassol but has factories and warehouses in the Netherlands and Vietnam as well. They develop their own versions of already established medicines and ship them around the world to 65 different countries. Currently Medochemie has over 600 products in use. During the meeting we learned about the extensive steps they take to ensure top notch quality assurance. This includes making sure that all their facilities are clean and that all the suppliers they work with have clean facilities as well. One thing that was interesting to learn about Medochemie was that they never shut down their factories during the Covid-19 outbreak. They were able to establish safe practices and eliminate large outbreaks. This allowed them to get products to customers in a time of need. Something that helped them move their products so easily was switching to sea transportation in 2018. Since Cyprus is located right in the middle of the Mediterranean, they were able to cheaply transport their products during Covid-19.

A second company we visited today was WarGaming. WarGaming is an online video game founded in 1998 with over 200 million players. When meeting with this company we learned the process behind creating a video game from the ground up. It starts with an idea then WarGaming outlines their idea as a board game to see if the idea is worth continuing with. If so, they start developing a prototype for the game. This process can last anywhere from a few months to several years. The longest part of the process is going to exhibitions and getting money from investors to continue building the prototype. Once the prototype is made then the game is published online and is free for anyone to play. It was very interesting to see how supply chain affected such different industries.
