Day 2, Microsoft

Today was such a great start to the week! Before visiting Microsoft, I had a few different assumptions. I mainly assumed that it would be a very busy place with lots of employees. I thought this because it is such a large and well-known company, but what we came to find out is that employees are only required to come into the office 2 days a week due to COVID, therefore it seemed less busy. I still absolutely loved the space and it would be a dream to work there. There were so many different spaces to work in including shared ones, cubicles, fun chairs, and even a rooftop area. I also did not know how involved Microsoft is with giving back to the community. They have multiple environmental initiatives and they even plan to be carbon negative by 2030. This is a big pledge for a company to make, but with all that they are doing, I am sure that they will achieve it. They also offer many different accommodations for gaming and laptops for those with disabilities. I did not realize how inclusive of a company they are. I also liked many of the quotes by their CEO, Satya Nadella. My personal favorite was “Be passionate and bold. Always keep learning. You stop doing useful things if you don’t learn”. I believe that Microsoft embodies this quote as we learned earlier today that in 2010, Microsoft’s company culture was extremely toxic. As a company and with help from Satya Nadella, they were able to access the current culture, change it for the better, and learn from the cultural shift that they saw. I would personally love to work with a company that has such a strong emphasis on positive company culture. Some of the presenters explained how in their day-to-day work, they feel like they are empowered to explore their own projects and ideas which is something that I look for within a company. After visiting Microsoft, a question that I would like to ask Dr. Kelley tomorrow is what is the company culture like at each company since Microsoft emphasized the importance of a positive one today. Below is a picture from the office’s balcony, it was so beautiful!
