Day 2 was nothing shy of a boring adventure. In fact, we started the day off bright and early at 7:30 AM! My family reading my blogs will probably get a good chuckle out of this one as they know I am not an early riser by any means, but I digress. Unlike the day before, we had to be at our site visit, Microsoft, prompt and early as the company’s team is quite busy during the work week. This morning the group was able to explore more of the Dublin city and find various cafes to grab a quick breakfast. The rush of the morning was accompanied by the objective of making it to Microsoft. To get to Microsoft, we took the Luas for the first time, a tram or light rail system, which sped us along to our destination. Following, we toured Croke Park Stadium where we got to understand more of the history and culture behind hurling and Gaelic football.
My initial impression of Microsoft before our visit was based on what I knew corporate America to be like. I pictured the office to have a more formal, corporate style office space. Another thing to mention is that I had only really think of Microsoft to be software that many of us, myself included, use on a regular basis. However, as soon as I walked into the building I was amazed to see it was quite the opposite of what I had envisioned. I felt welcomed when I stepped through the doors especially seeing a large panel screen welcoming the University of Pittsburgh. It was surreal that I had the chance to step foot into the Microsoft headquarters in Dublin. The artistic eye in myself can also appreciate how the space looks and feels what I imagine a technology company to look like. Rather than a cold corporate feel, the space was modernized with various technology implemented throughout the office. The architecture of the stairs heading up to the primary office spaces was crafted in mind to feel modernized while parts of the floor even illuminated. Another aspect of the meeting I learned that Microsoft is just more than software and applications, but focused on becoming more sustainable, company culture, and being customer “obsessed” meaning putting their customers at the forefront of everything and being passionate in helping out. For example, we saw a newer piece of technology called augmented reality. We had the chance to try out the headset where augmented reality added items seemingly into empty space. This immersive experience adds items to reality which combines reality and a simulation. It was noted that this device can enhance the business field.
The Dublin office has incorporated themselves into the community and the country in various ways. One example that comes to mind is Microsoft’s “Dream Space.” Dream Space at Microsoft Ireland provides immersive, research-based STEM experiences for students, teachers and communities to enhance their STEM skills alongside crucial social-emotional skills such as empathy, creativity, ethical decision making and collaboration. According to Microsoft, it also empowers everyone to see the power of digital technology and STEM in exciting new ways and the crucial role that these areas have now and into the future. Technology is rapidly changing how we live, work and play and it appears that Microsoft is a major force in driving this change. This space creates the opportunity for the Irish based team to do more together by facilitating development, innovation and creativity by involving the community within this change. Another area that I noted that demonstrated Microsoft incorporating themselves into the community and country is via creating technology for various different types of needs as well as creating new opportunities for careers. In terms of tech gadgets, Microsoft caters towards those with disabilities so that gaming can be more easily accessible. Furthermore, another unique opportunity that demonstrates the element of inclusivity is the company creating a program where they hire autistic individuals to work within the company. This I felt was very neat as I am happy to see that Microsoft is moving towards a more progressive company culture that is inclusive.
I feel that I would like to work at Microsoft since it incorporates many of the elements that I am looking for in a workplace. For one, Microsoft prides themselves in the mental health of their employees and require them to take time off (paid) to rest. Another part of the company I found to be beneficial is the various areas where you could work. It seemed every corner you turned there was a comfy, inviting space where you could choose to either work alone or collaborate with other coworkers. For me, I get bored of being in one spot and having a space that allows me to be creative or gets my creative thinking process flowing is something I value. Lastly, I think it is great that Microsoft encourages employees to go out and play a sport or go out during the work day. As someone who cannot always sit for long durations of time, I rely on doing something new to keep my focus. I feel this would be beneficial for me to reflect back on my tour of Microsoft and look for some of these elements when seeking out a future place of employment.
Now that I have a better understanding of a tech company such as Microsoft, I am looking forward to the tour of the docklands financial district with Dr. Kelley. With the tour of Microsoft being a great learning opportunity, I want to take this opportunity to ask more about technology as I feel my knowledge is more limited on the subject matter. I would particularly like to know and understand more how technology companies are involving communities as well as the country.
Excited for the days to come!
