Day 3: Port Stuff

Today we went back to Limassol, which has the largest port in all of Cyprus, and explored the shipping industry as well as the marina in the city. At 8 this morning we boarded a bus to go there. They required us to bring our passports for dock security purposes, which we ended up not needing. We talked and toured the dock with 2 of the companies that help run it, Dubai Ports World (DPW) and Eurogate. DPW is a general maritime company with a lot of ports around the world. They help with cruise lines as well as container shipping. Eurogate, on the other hand, is smaller and handles just container shipping. From DPW, we learned how the logistics of the port works in general and from Eurogate we learned about the logistics of container shipping, including the little details of how much time a container can stay in the inventory of a lot. Overall it was very interesting to learn about an industry that I did not know that much about before.

After this we went to the Limassol Marina for lunch at Diamante Blu. They served us a smorgasbord of what I would consider to be American food, including hamburgers, chicken wraps, french fries, mozzarella sticks, and breaded chicken. We then headed to the Limassol Castle (which is now a history museum). Honestly, by reflecting on my experiences there, I feel it’s genuinely amazing that countries with long well-recorded histories are able to have one place show so much of that. And the view from the top of the castle was amazing. We were able to see the whole city. The experience was just so cool. We then headed back to the Marina, right by the sea. Honestly the Mediterranean Sea is beautiful and clearer than I would have assumed. During this time, I bought a small gift that I’m going to give to my grandparents hopefully soon. We then headed back to the hotel. Overall I had a wonderful day in Limassol.
