Day 5: An Eye-Opening Experience

Today, Day 5 began with a 9:30AM departure time to Limassol to visit the Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) Maritime Training Center after my typical morning breakfast, of course. Here, we learned about the certification process for becoming a vessel crew member and even the safety equipment and procedures/practices that crew members must be able to carry out in case of emergency. Also, the engine room and bridge room were quite intriguing because we got to first-hand see the numerous controls, measures, dials, etc. used in simulation practices that are manipulated by the captain for the crew members to remedy the problem in an immediate manner.

Next, we made our way over to Zygi for lunch at Koumbaris Fish Tavern. This was a meze-style meal where a variety of seafood dishes were continually brought out such as fish, shrimp, octopus, crab, and bread. I made the effort to at least try each dish. I was also offered pocket change (four euros) for eating a fish eye straight up, which I took up!

After an exceptional lunch, we visited the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, closer to Larnaca. It was fascinating to visit a Muslim area of prayer for the first time on this trip. After this quick stop, we made our way over to Larnaca to enjoy the beach during our free time. Although the water was chilly at first, it was still refreshing.

Once returning back to Nicosia a little after 7PM, we decided to eat at a tasty Italian restaurant (Il Forno) in the Old City.
