Today we started our overnight trip to Paphos. We stopped at a few places on the way. We started with a tour of Kourion archeological site. It was so cool to see how they built each part by digging so much underground. There were many bathing areas including a hot and a cold bath section. It was interesting how the baths had a place to wash your feet before going in. There was also an amphitheater for performances. There is a spot right in the middle of the amphitheater that allows you to hear everything when you speak from there. Currently, there are pipes that allow it to keep the site as dry as possible. It’s crazy to think about how long something like this took to make with limited resources.
We then visited Aphrodite’s rocks where the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite was born. The water around it was clear along with some other rocks too. There was a huge rock that most people climbed up to the top to. We visited the Tomb of Kings where higher officials were buried. We were able to go in and see empty tombs. We could also see the difference between the modern and the older ones. After that, we visited the mosaics where each one told a different story. It was so interesting to see how intricate each mosaic was. You could tell how much time it took to make it since some of them even showed some three dimensional aspects. These are even difficult to draw and paint so seeing them in mosaic form was really cool. A lot of the mosaics depict stories with wine since this was the House of Dionysos, the god of wine. We ended our day at the beach and in the harbor after checking into our hotel.
