Hello all! My name is Angus Nicholson, and I am a freshman engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh. I was born and raised in Anchorage Alaska. When I am home, I live with my mom, dad, and younger brother who is two years younger than I am. I enjoy all outdoor activities especially skiing in the cold winters of Alaska. I recently declared my major to be Mechanical Engineering and plan on specializing in the marine design field with a certificate or minor. I am extremely excited to get to know everyone and experience all that the program has to offer.
My chosen program for Plus 3 this May is the Netherlands. Ever since I took four years of French classes in high school, I have been looking for an opportunity to participate in a study abroad program such as Plus 3. The Netherlands trip also offers a deep dive into the business sides of engineering and supply chain industries. Since the beginning of my time at the University of Pittsburgh one thing that I have learned about the field of engineering is the heavy reliance on understanding all aspects of the business of engineering, not just the design aspect. Therefore, I singled out Plus 3 so that I can experience the business side of engineering while fulfilling a goal of mine to travel abroad.
While travelling abroad I expect to accomplish many things during my time. The first thing is to take advantage of all that travelling abroad in the Netherlands has to offer. This includes taking in all of the sights in Amsterdam and surrounding places we visit. I hope to experience all the European cultures and customs. The second thing is that I plan on developing a professional understanding of business and engineering to further my plans on becoming a mechanical engineer. I believe that visiting and participating in professional day to day life will help me visualize my future in my career. Finally, I hope to enjoy my time!
