Before we head of to our incredible adventure overseas, we were asked to think about the sustainability of Costa Rica. From our prompt I learned that “Costa Rica consistently ranks in the top 20 of World Energy Council’s global ‘environmental sustainability’ ranking.” This is not surprising to me as our pre-departure meetings touched on the sustainable nature and economy of Costa Rica. However, we were then asked to address how we perceive the country from this information.
Personally, I think this is progressive of a nation to do. This is a tough ideology to put onto all of the country’s locals and actually have the wanted result come to fruition. Obviously the world needs to be more sustainable now because of our overwhelming amount of global and climate-related problems, so I think Costa Rica is commendable for their actions.
From a swift internet search I learned that ninety-three percent of Costa Rica’s electricity comes from renewable resources. This is amazing for an entire country to accomplish. I believe that this is the way the rest of the world should be thinking. Secondly, I learned that the country has implemented environmental policies for the past fifty years. That is incredible! I cannot think of other countries that have been attempting to make an impact for such a prolonged period of time. It was interesting how I did not spot any information about coffee or bananas from these brief searches, but I do think the country is trying to make their tourism more ecofriendly, and that includes showing tourists how their agriculture operates.
Lastly, we are asked a simple question: “why are you excited to got to Costa Rica?” This is a no brainer for me. Who doesn’t want to go to a tropical country in the summer to learn about tropical fruit, coffee and chocolate? Who wouldn’t want to travel to eat delicious food and stay amongst locals in a new culture you may have never experienced before? This is all right up my alley. But in conclusion, I would say that bottom line, I am excited to do new things. Now whether this means seeing new places, meeting new people or eating new food, I am extremely excited for all of it.
