After a long day of travel we have finally made it to The Netherlands! We flew into the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport early this morning and took a short bus ride to our home for the next two weeks, The Generator. We got a brief rundown of all the details about the program and got to see our detailed itinerary for the trip. We then got to go on a tour of the neighborhoods surrounding The Generator and were made aware of how to navigate the streets of Amsterdam safely. Coming to Amsterdam I knew that biking was a huge mode of transportation, but was still surprised by the amount of bikes and bikers there are in the city. It is really important to stay out of the bike lanes and always look out for bikers. We also learned about the different types of grocery stores here in Amsterdam and their relation to grocery stores in The U.S. It is quite evident that we are tourists just because of how new everything is to us. I feel that once we get the hang of the environment here we will fit in more. It was so beautiful outside this afternoon, so we decided to eat our lunch in the park which is a very local thing to do and it really made it a nice welcome on our first day! We later went to this really great restaurant named Bar Botanique and it was really cool to see how fast paced and hardworking the workers are here. They were extremely kind and welcoming to our group which made it a wonderful first evening. After dinner I was able to walk around some new parts of the city that I have not seen yet and I really enjoyed the different architecture and how all the houses were connected but all looked completely different. I look forward for more adventures to come tomorrow!
