We’re Soarin’ Flyin’

Saturday, May 7th

Today we began our 24 hours of travel to get to Cyprus. I am so excited for the trip, but I am also incredibly nervous because there is so much that could go wrong throughout the travel experience. My luggage could get lost, I could lose my passport, we could miss our connecting flight in DC, I could have forgotten something important back in Pittsburgh, or the plane could crash. It is probably evident that I tend to plan for the worst, but I am trying to put all my worries aside and enjoy the journey as best I can. Our first flight from Pittsburgh to D.C. was a breeze and it felt like we were only in the air for 10 minutes, but our flight to Germany was rough to say the least. This is not my first time flying to Europe, so I know what I am getting myself into, but overnight flights are never fun. One thing that was new to me was getting off the plane of the tarmac which happened on both of our first two flights. It was cool to see behind the scenes of the flying process and it was not nearly as confusing as I was expecting. On the flight to Germany the food was pretty bad, the turbulence was terrible, and I could not sleep at all, so I was not having the best time.

Once we touched down in Germany on Sunday morning, things started to look up. We finally got time to walk around and eat some good food. There were fewer options than I expected, but it was very interesting to look around the shops and see the differences between the shops in the States. My favorite purchase while in the Germany airport was a Capri Sun, which was in packaging and in a flavor that we do not have in the United States. There were also interesting flavors of familiar foods like paprika Doritos and cornflake chocolate which was really cool to see. Even just visiting the airport makes me really excited to be traveling to Germany next semester and learn more about the culture.  We are about to board our final flight to Cyprus, and I am really looking forward to being done with travel and getting to experience all that Cyprus has to offer.
