Amsterdam: Return of the Planes

Day 2! After a well needed nights rest, we started the day with breakfast at our hostel. It was a delicious meal, where I, controversially, ate multiple kiwis like apples. An interesting thing I’ve learned about The Netherlands is that it is highly frowned upon to take more food than you eat. Fortunately, I had no problem demolishing the meal.

After breakfast we met with Karel Bockstael, an engineer who worked with the airline KLM for roughly 3 decades. He lectured us on current issues and developments of sustainability within air traffic. It was highly interesting to see how things I’ve learned about in classes applied to his lecture. Additionally, I found his talk super intriguing as I am leaning towards working on sustainability within engineering.

After the educational meeting, we walked all over the city, exploring canals and famous landmarks. Notably, we saw the Rijksmuseum and the famous bench from the Fault in Our Stars (of which I’ve never read or seen). A few of us stopped for lunch at a nice caffe and then met up with the whole group to tour the Anne Franke Huis. I found the site very surprising as I never realized they concealed a 3 story home, not just a small attic.

To round off the day, we plan to go back into the city for dinner and a little more exploration around the canals. The weather is currently beautiful and I am hoping that we don’t get drenched in rain as we explore the windmills tomorrow. Doei!
