The Secret Annexe

After a nice breakfast at the generator, we met with Karel Bockstael to discuss sustainability in the airline industry. He had lots of engineering experience and used his technical knowledge to enhance sustainability initiatives within KLM. He explained the engineering behind aerospace technology while discussing the complexities of pricing. Considering the incredible expense of sustainability initiatives, only the very wealthy have the ability to prioritize the practices, further segregating the already divided industry. Karl mentioned that if he were to take an international flight, he would pay about $200 to offset his kerosene impact. Following the discussion, I asked questions about green marketing regulation within the airline industry and where KLM stands in the sustainability space within the field in comparison to competitors.

After meeting with Karel, we visited the Anne Frank museum and walked through the apartment she lived in throughout 2 years in hiding. We walked through the Secret Annexe and saw the room Anne and her sister, Margot, lived in and where Anne spent most of her time writing her diary. We learned about the loyal friends and good-hearted people that assisted the Frank’s throughout their time in hiding. Many of the employees of the Frank’s company continued to help the family (by providing food and medicine) despite the threat that doing so posed to their personal safety. Seeing the physical space in which the family hid made Anne Frank’s experience feel much more tangible. At the end of the museum, there was a video diary exhibit that featured a girl Anne’s age vlogging acting out Anne’s experience. Seeing the girl talking about her experience on video made Anne’s unimaginable experience feel more real. I watched as Anne and her family received news that the Allied Powers captured land from the Axis Powers. She filmed her family quietly celebrating as they believed liberation was soon to follow. The video ends and cuts to text stating that the Frank family was arrested one month after this event. It was heart-breaking to see.
