Rain Rain Go Away

Day three in the Netherlands was a rainy one. And that is certainly no understatement. It rained pretty much non stop for the entire day.  While this dampened spirits a bit, we still made the most out of our time.  Breakfast was pushed back half an hour this morning to 8:30, allowing for a critical extra half hour of sleep.  The breakfast buffet continues to impress me, with a solid choice of eggs, bacon, sausage, fruits, and a variety of breads and pastries.  It’s certainly a good way to start the morning.  After breakfast we met our guide for the day, Felipe.  Felipe took us to a small town outside of Amsterdam called Zaanse Schans.  We encountered some difficulties in transit with having to take multiple trains, and the group splitting at one point, but by noon we had reached our destination.  Zaanse Schans is known for its series of windmills.  We learned about the engineering behind the windmills, and their significance to the Netherlands.  We also had the privilege to watch live demonstrations of both Clog making, and cheese making.  After the cheese making we spent some time taste testing a variety of cheese, even including a beer flavored one.  Before bidding farewell to Felipe, we all sat down for a pancake lunch.  My bacon pancake certainly helped warm me up from the cold and rainy weather.  To conclude our time in the town we visited its museum.  They had displays and models of the windmills, which were not only educational but visually appealing as well.  But the most memorable part of the museum was certainly the chocolate making section.  With games, taste tests, and equipment demonstrations, this exhibit was engaging and fun.  I think everyone had a good time with it.  Afterwards we took the train back to Amsterdam, and were set free.  A number of the guys and I stayed downtime for a while to get a nice Italian dinner.  The pasta was prime, and felt rewarding after a long and tiring day.  Tonight will be an early one, as our day starts at 6:15 am tomorrow.  Time to get some rest!
