Day 3: Sudden Onset Illiteracy

Traveling anywhere has the potential to create some awkward experiences because of a brand new environment, but when in a new place with a language I know none of, this has definitely caused a few “fish out of water” experiences. But, there is no better way to learn than to be uncomfortable, especially when all of us are going through the exact same struggles.

The most poignant moments like this for me have been centered around being effectively illiterate while staying in Prague. In the US, I definitely take for granted how easy it is to move around any environment because every sign and almost every person speaks fluent English. Here, the story is much different. When navigating the city, there are many signs on businesses or the roads that I simply can’t read.

Despite my Czech language inadequacy, it has been a surprisingly simple and pleasant experience getting through, thanks to our tour guide, Jana. Over the rest of the trip, I hope to use this immersion to learn some of the language to be able to communicate more effectively with people here, and to bring home some fun Czech knowledge!
