Getting Personal

Today we got to hear a presentation from Ellie Doyle, walk through the north side of Dublin, and take a tour of Croke Park. Ellie Doyle’s presentation was very interesting because she talked about recruiting and creating a personal brand. She founded the recruiting company, TalentHub, and gave us a new perspective on resumes, interviews, and our online presence.

One of my biggest takeaways from her presentation was to develop and advocate for my essential skills, which include communication, teamwork, problem solving, and other transferrable skills. As technology develops and automation takes over some jobs, employers are looking for people that have these skills because they are not easily taught. She also emphasized that many employers want to see all that you have to offer, aside from a GPA. On my resume and in interviews, I want to advocate for my essential skills to set myself apart. It is important to connect these skills to the position and the company as well.

She also referred to these essential skills as competencies. These are aspects of yourself that are not easily changed, in comparison to knowledge and skills which can be taught and practiced. Some of my biggest competencies are teamwork, motivation, and adaptability. I grew up playing sports and being part of a team, so I understand the value in working with others towards a common goal. Being able to effectively work with a group of people will allow me collaborate with others in order to reach our shared goals. I also have high motivation and discipline. Growing up I have always been a hard worker and had a strong desire to achieve my goals. In business, having a strong desire to succeed will allow me to be successful in my role and contribute to the company culture. Additionally, I am adaptable and open to change. In a continuously developing world, this is crucial to business success because I will be able to positively react to any change or challenge I face. I will quickly assimilate into my role and the company, and I will be excited to continue learning and taking on new responsibilities in the company.

Another key part of her presentation was to develop our personal brand. She described this as what others say about you when you are not around, or your reputation. Your brand can impact how others treat you and what projects you are offered. In business, having an awareness of your personal brand and developing it is important. One way I want to develop and control my personal brand is to put an impact statement on my resume and ask for feedback from others. As far as my personal brand, I am a dedicated student and worker who will always put forth their best effort. I am passionate about working with others and helping them succeed. I value team culture and aspire to contribute to a positive, motivated business in the future. I am excited to start working for a company where I can continue to grow and contribute to their success.

Overall, Ellie Doyle’s presentation gave many insights on how to approach employers, and I will definitely be implementing her ideas. I’m excited to keep learning about myself and business in Ireland.
