Day Three – Company Visit with Hoerbiger

Today marked the first of four days during which we would be investigating, and eventually presenting, our findings about our assigned companies.

As a result, we toured two of Hoerbiger’s factories today. It was surprising to see that both had very completely different focuses and workplace environments. The first factory we toured was quite small and modern, and was focused on the construction of valves that help control ventilators for use in hospitals. The second factory was very large and was primarily focused on building parts for car transmissions. Interestingly, it seems as though Hoerbiger may have to shift their focus from these transmission parts fully into other applications of their technology (such as their ventilator valves) because of the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, which do not require multi-speed transmissions. Although it’s hard to imagine Hoerbiger shifting its focus away from these parts when the entirety of its large factory was focused on producing them, it seems that the company has a plan in place to move forward with other applications.

After our company visit concluded, we visited Oberammergau, a small town with beautiful views of the Alps. We rode a gondola to the top of a nearby mountain, and witnessed an incredible view of the rest of the mountains and the town below.

This trip has been so diverse, and I feel like it has provided me with so many opportunities to explore a new culture and experience the business/engineering worlds in ways I never have before. Thanks for following along!
