Today was the start of our site visits that we are doing throughout the trip. The day started off with Dr. Kelly giving us an in-depth rundown of how schooling and businesses operated in Ireland many years ago. We walked around the financial district in Dublin, stopping at multiple spots to hear about the history of the area. After this, we did our first site visit to Google HQ. Dr. Kelly’s main focus was how Ireland has undergone significant cultural and economic changes. One of the most significant changes has been the move away from an agricultural-based economy towards a more diversified economy that includes services, manufacturing, and technology. In the past, many Irish people lived in rural areas and worked as farmers, often in small family farms. This lifestyle was closely tied to the land and the seasons, and people had a strong sense of community and tradition. Today, Ireland has become more urbanized, and many people work in cities or towns rather than in the countryside. There has also been a significant shift in social attitudes, with greater acceptance of diversity and an increasing focus on equality and human rights. A perfect example of where you can see this today was during our site visit to Google. During our time with the Googlers, there was a lot of focus on diversity and inclusion that we were able to see throughout the buildings. The company has implemented several programs and initiatives to promote diversity and create a welcoming environment for people from all backgrounds.
After our site visit, I realized how amazing it would be to work at Google. Google is one of the world’s most innovative and influential companies, and working at its Dublin office offers the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest and most creative minds in the tech industry like we saw today. The company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion also creates a supportive and welcoming workplace culture that values all employees, regardless of their background or identity which is a huge upside when looking for a company to commit yourself to. Another huge benefit you get working with Google is the free meals every day, an on-site fitness facility, and even an on-site dentist there for you at your convenience. From the short time we had there today, it seemed like an actual dream. If I ever had the opportunity to work with Google, I wouldn’t think twice about it!
