Googler’s Tour

Today was our first of several site visits of Plus3 Ireland. Dr. Kelly taught us about how in the context of business old traditions, norms, and cultural practices clash with the modern technologies, innovation, and shifting values. The locals believe if Ireland focuses only on business development they will lose all cultural significance and end up like a city like London. Since I have been in Ireland I have observed a lot about the old and new. On one side, the old offers rich cultural heritage that values its traditions and history, but did not create much opportunity for the Irish. Dr. Kelly explained how the Irish had to leave the country for job opportunities, and those jobs were the “dirty work” that all the immigrants do. And on the other side Ireland is also a modern country that embraces innovation and global trends. Ireland proceed to find the balance of staying competitive in globalization while respecting thier cultural roots.

Would I work at Google… there are many considerations that would go to into this decision. Obviously Google is one of the most influential companies in the word, with some of the greatest opportunities for growth. Meanwhile, Google has a 0.063% acceptance rate for their applications, receiving over 3 million per year. The demanding workload, high expectations, and competition at work would ultimately make the job extremely stressful. Therefore, as much as I would be honored and privileged to work at Google, their headquarters was unbelievable, I do not think it would make sense for me.
