We started our morning with quite an interesting journey to Rotterdam. We took the metro to another train at Central Amsterdam, but the fast track we were on shut down because of an incident. We then had to switch trains and finally made it to Rotterdam a little late. This experience reminded me of American culture because I took the train between New York and New Jersey all the time and I always ran into similar incidents where trains shut down and I had to find solutions.
We then dropped our bags at the hostel and grabbed a quick bite before taking the metro to the Floating Farm. This is a three level farm that is on the water instead of the land. This is because seventy percent of the world is water and after a hurricane, it was realized that they could transport items still in a hurricane. They have very sustainable practices such as using food waste from the town as cow feed and breaking the manure down to make fertilizing pellets that they can resell. It is very cool to see them not sticking with the typical way of farming, but improving it in so many different ways. Then we toured the farm on water and saw all of the machines that milk the cows, break down the manure and even got to see the cows eating. They were very cute and friendly. I was very impressed with how they were able to balance the business and profit aspect even through covid, and still be extremely sustainable.
We next took a walk along the bridge before our harbor cruise. Since we are only in Rotterdam for a short period of time, I loved being able to see all of the beautiful sites around the city. There were so many ports, being the largest port in Europe and it was cool to see tons of ships and cargo. Lastly, we went to eat at a great Turkish restaurant where we got kebabs and tons of sides that were very good. It was packed with flavor and I love eating all different cultural foods.
