A Port’s Complexities

Limassol is divided among four entities DP World, P&O Maritime, Eurogate, and Cyprus Port Authority. Since we are staying in Limassol, today’s bus ride was a short 30 minutes. Once we arrived at the port, the first company we visited was DP World. DP World holds the top position of the port while surrogate controls the rest of the port that is beneath the DP World section, P&O Maritime owns the waters of the harbor, and Cyprus Port Authority is the landlord and regulator of the port.
Dp World gave us a presentation on how their part of the port works and a basic overview of how the port is divided among the companies. DP World’s portion of the port handles ships with items, not in shipping containers; for example, cruise ships are something DP World services. Due to this, DP World’s position in the supply chain could be considered a distributor. It is a distributor because it handles imports to trucking companies to deliver to customers.
P&O Maritime was the next company we had a presentation with. P&O only controls the waters in the port because it ensures all the waters stay clean and pass regulations. Since P&O offer no products, they would be a consumer in the supply chain. This is because they have to buy all the equipment they use to test and maintain the Limassol port’s waters.
Eurogate was the third company we visited. Eurogate’s job is to unload and distribute goods from a cargo ship full of standardized containers. Eurogate is considered a distributor because it unloads containers off cargo ships and then prepares them for truck companies to pick up and distribute the goods to the rest of the island.
The final company we visited was Cyprus Port Authority. Cyprus Port Authority is not a traditional company but a semi-governmental body regulating and managing the port’s activity. Due to the company’s unique characteristics, it lies outside of the conventional supply chain. The Cyprus Port Authority looks over the steps of the supply chain that DPworld, Eurogate, and P&O are a part of to make sure they are following regulations, new and old.
