Ports of call!

This morning we headed to ports! Unlike the US, the ports here offer a different type of infrastructure and operate under different standards. We arrived at the security checkpoint with our passports for ID, and first visited DP world . DP World Limassol is a container terminal located in Limassol, Cyprus, and is part of the global DP World network of ports and terminals. As a company, DP World has a reputation for investing in modern infrastructure and technology to improve the efficiency and safety of their operations. In Limassol, DP World has implemented advanced cargo tracking systems and mobile apps to streamline the flow of goods and information, while also promoting sustainability through the use of renewable energy and eco-friendly practices. When we asked about how they measure this, they simply responded that they (as well as CMMI participate in ESG’s. Which is a set sustainability report that focuses on environmental, social, and governance regulations.

Then we headed next door to eurogate. DP World Limassol and Eurogate Limassol refer to the same container terminal in Limassol, Cyprus. We were given a tour of the entire facility which has advanced cargo tracking systems, modern handling equipment, and a well-trained workforce to provide world-class services to its customers. Overall, Eurogate Limassol plays an important role in supporting the economy of Cyprus by facilitating international trade and connecting the island nation to the rest of the world.

For lunch we went back to the Limassol marina and had lunch on a boat! Big surprise because Jodi said no boats for us! We had time to relax and enjoy a buffet style lunch before we invited a team of expert panalists for a Q & A session. We were able to ask questions about sustainability and the panelists said they were shocked by how intuitive our questions are compared to other groups they present to. Again, the sustainability measures taken by companies in Cyprus seem to be lacking proper motivation then companies in the US. They take more of a response approach rather than a preventative approach. In addition to our meeting with DP world and Eurogate they also gave us insight about the competition between shipping operations. They explained that they work more together especially because of the mass that they can control. In events of natural disaster they work together to store terminals for long periods of time or other ways to help.

We left the boat around 5 and then rested and went out to dinner. We choose a Cypriot restaurant on the water and it might have been a mistake because the language barrier was too much and our server switched out with someone else. In America it’s common to order everything right away and it come out when it’s ready but in European culture this is not the case. Long drawn out dinners with multiple courses and then drinks in between is the way dining out goes. The food was good but the european-style-authenticity of this restaurant shouldn’t have been over looked by us looking for a quick bite.
