19 in The Netherlands: Netherlands Day 8

Today I turned 19! After another night of minimal sleep, I woke up at 10 to go to this absolutely Huge vintage market. Second hand shopping is a big thing in the Netherlands, and there are shops everywhere. However, they are nothing compared to how big this market was. We spent 2 hours at the market, where I unfortunately didn’t have a whole lot of luck in finding stuff. There were something I found that I liked, like this vintage racing jacket, but it didn’t fit me. I did get a nice green jacket for only 10 euros though! It has a stain on it that I’m hoping will wash off, but if it doesn’t it won’t be the end of the world since it was only 10 euros.

After the market, we headed to the alumni lunch meet up where we got to socialize and talk with 8 different Pitt alumni that are all in the Amsterdam area. A lot of them had been in the Netherlands for 10+ years, so it was very interesting to hear about their experiences here. I only had the opportunity to talk to 3 of the 8 alumni, but the conversations we had gave me great insight into what they were responsible for in their jobs. It was very interesting to hear how so much emphasis is being placed on sustainability throughout all of the various companies and industries that all of the alumni worked at.

When the lunch was over, a bunch of the guys went down a nearby street that had a bunch of thrift stores. While I didn’t find anything there, I did get a nice powder blue crewneck from a store called hang eleven, which is great because I didn’t pack any hoodies or anything for the cold (thanks mom).

Unfortunately, the lack of sleep across this trip has caught up to not only me, but everyone else so we have postponed celebrating my birthday to a later day of the trip.
