The Trifecta of Limassol

Today, we toured the largest port of southern Cyprus, Limassol. The port of Limassol was first controlled by the government until financial hardships in 2017 forced Cyprus’ government to turn the port into three private-public partnerships. This included DP World, Eurogate, and P&O Maritime. Each having their specialties, they work cohesively to create a trifecta of shipping throughout Limassol. It is also important to know, the Cyprus Port Authority also occupies the port to keep the trifecta in check.

DP World is a multipurpose port dealing with three different areas of shipping. The east side of the port houses the cruise’s arrivals and departures. The north side houses oil and gas imports and the southeast side houses the cargo area. They play a major point in product distribution within industrial engineering as they receive and redirect the products to the customers. Vice versa, they ship out and distribute products from companies. Being a major part of the transportation of goods within the supply chain DP World must be extremely efficient as this maximizes the money gained. Therefore, key performance indicators (KPIs) were introduced to show the efficiency of shipping. One investment that increased KPIs was in Zodiac, a software dashboard that controls the distribution of cargo and the inventory of cargo. With being incredibly efficient, DP World forms the first of the trifecta.

Eurogate is a cargo shipping-focused port containing 4 major cranes that control this area of the port. They play the same role as DP World, where they impact the distribution of goods. When touring, they made it important to know how they are constantly improving distribution to result in more profits. This includes investing in STS Cranes in 2017, thus modernizing the crane and terminal system. They increased from 32 to 52.5 meters in height, increased the range of 18 to 23 rows, and increased the carrying capacity of 45 to 75 tons. This was retrofitted so that it fits any boat that enters the port. This improves their KPIs heavily, creating extreme efficiency.

P&O Maritime is a third of the trifecta, being mainly focused on marine services. This includes tugboat pulling, oil spill cleanup, and just overall making the port as efficient as possible. This affects the supply chain by making the distribution as smooth as possible. They are highly focused on the health, safety, and relations of the employees. Overall, P&O Maritime aids in the efficiency of the port, finishing the trifecta.

Cyprus Port Authority keeps this trifecta in check through a series of checks and balances. This reassures that the port is operated by the government and does everything by the books. With the trifecta and the Cyprus Port Authority, the Limassol Port is one of the most influential ports throughout the world.
