Boiling like some Palm

Today was a very hot and humid day, but that’s because we got the chance to learn about the heart of palm. This was a very different experience then going to a  coffee plantation considering that they usually grow on mountains which are usually cooler. On the other hand, just like coffee the important is on the inside (a shell for coffee, and a trunk for heart of palm). We got the opportunity to watch our tour guide grab a machete and very skillfully cut down a trunk to get to the heart of palm but thankfully we didn’t have to wait for someone to cook it (since it is edible raw) we got to try the deliciousness right away.

One of the most interesting parts about this trip was finding out that this company takes the heart of palm and tries to create their very own recipes for people eat. Fortunately, as our main course we got to try heart of palm lasagna and rate it. Personally I thought it was different but I liked it, my one issue was with the consistency which I think could easily be fixed by adding more noodles and evening out the heart of palm ratio, but overall the taste, the seasoning, and especially the cheese is what made me like it so much.

With my topic being sourcing the biggest issue they deal with is gaining workers. Just like past businesses they same issue arises that this is a family business, and who’s to say the next generation will want to carry this on. Unfortunately, if that ever happens and the land becomes unproductive for around 10 years then the government will take the land back. Thankfully, that is not a big problem for right not and we can keep enjoying this heart of palm.
