I seriously can’t believe it’s day nine in Argentina. It doesn’t feel like we have been here this long at all and we keep getting closer and closer to coming home but I’m not ready to leave. Today we had an early start at eight am. We went to Austral hospital and Austral University. They are both private so people have to pay for both, unlike public hospitals and universities they don’t have to pay a dime. We had a lecture from the Chairman of Austral hospital and he explained and clarified what they do and how that specific hospital functions. We had a tour of the private hospital called Austral and it was a really nice hospital. The nurse that showed us around was so nice and very informative and answered all the questions we had. We already visited a private hospital last Monday which was called Sanatorio Arcos and it is ran by Swiss Medical. Swiss Medical is one of the largest healthcare providers in Argentina and offers a wide range of services. The Austral Hospital is known for its renowned expertise in various medical fields. Austral hospital also has advanced technology. The main difference is wait times for each hospital. If you would schedule an appointment for the Austral hospital you wouldn’t get in until about a month. For Swiss medical the wait times are a lot shorter. If you would schedule an appointment you would get in within a couple of hours. They both are private hospitals that are very well known. They both also offer high quality of care to their patients. After we toured the hospital we went to the palliative care center. We had a lecture from the doctor there and he explained what occurs in that specific building. He said that people that are in here have chronic illnesses and almost all the patients there will end up dying there. There are 13 hospital beds inside that hospital. At the palliative care center even though the patient might not make it, it’s a happy place for them. They mentioned that one lady had horses and they ended up bringing one so she could see and pet again. I believe this is something that the United States needs to change. We should focus more on the quality of life of our patients and less on the length of life for them. After we were done there we went to lunch at the Austral University. We had lunch with some students from Austral and they were so nice. At our table was a girl named Guadalupe and Sofie. Guadalupe’s major is international affairs and Sofie’s is nursing. They explained their daily lives and how their University is different from ours. It was so cool to see how different it was but also how similar. I really enjoyed talking to both Guadalupe and Sofie.
