Regensburg and Walhalla

Today we had the opportunity to visit two places Regensburg which is Germany’s fourth largest city and Walhalla a Greek like monument. I think Regensburg was definitely the most interesting city we have visited thus far because the city was not destroyed during the war unlike many other cities, therefore the old architecture is still present.

When we arrived we walked around the town to meet up with our tour guide. Once we met up with her we toured the city seeing all that it has to offer. We saw different murals, towers, the river, etc. all of which you could tell have been around for many years. What I found the most interesting were the towers. Our tour guide explained that these were a demonstration of wealth and hierarchy during this time period. Nowadays they are public areas such as housing for university students or they are private houses. Each tower also had their own courtyard which again can either be public or private.

It was so cool to see a city that was not bombed during the war. For example, when we went to Munich it was very heavily bombed so there were a lot of remakes, but in Regensburg there not many remakes. So during the tour, the guide would point out buildings from the beginning of settlement in Regensburg that are still standing today, which I thought was really cool and a change of pace from the newer buildings that are meant to symbolize the old.

Once the tour was over we had a few hours of free time. So, the first thing my friends and I did were to go and get lunch. We chose to go to an Italian restaurant where everyone got either pasta or pizza. The food was really good and came in huge proportions. The pizza was falling off of the dish it was that big. We then walked around to pick up some gifts for family back home. We went into a cute little german shop with mugs, ornaments, nutcrackers, etc. then we went for some gelato. The gelato was really good. Once we finished our gelato we walked over to the cathedral to get a break from the rain and to tour the inside. The inside was gorgeous and huge unlike anything I’ve seen before. Once we were done touring it was time to leave.

Back on the bus, we drove to Walhalla which is a Greek like structure in Germany. I thought this was an interesting feature as it was in the middle of nowhere and was very different from the other architecture we saw this day. It was beautiful sight and there was a museum of sculptures inside. The view outside was of the countryside and the river and there were even sheep at the bottom that we ventured down to see. I was very interested in this architecture because it was so different from everything else. I am very happy that we got the opportunity to visit this place.
