Day 11: Pills and Vessels

Today we were visiting two completely different kind of companies. Medochemie was our first company that we were visiting and was only a short distance from our hotel, located in Limassol. Here we learned about their system for sending medicine to different companies and how if something goes wrong it all falls down on one individual person and not the company itself. This was very interesting to me because in the United States, you don’t typically see a system put into place like this, instead the whole company is usually liable. They also explained how they stock the different kinds of medicine which was very interesting to say the least. Most of the time, they only produce as much medicine as they need that is being requested at the time by the consumer. However, there are special cases where they will stockpile and overproduce a certain amount of medicine if it is deemed essential or high-traffic, essentially meaning they sell a lot/export a lot of it. After their lecture, we were shown around the warehouse and shown how they optimized space by installing aisles that move on wheels. This allowed for more goods to be stored in the warehouse than if they had non-moving aisles. In the Supply Chain, Medochemie stands as a supplier as they manufacture the pills/drugs and sell them to the consumers.

Our next visit of the day was completely different from the first. Columbia Ship Management (CSM) was only a short distance away and dealt a completely different field in that of shipping. Columbia Ship Management specializes in managing and helping to guide ships as well as helping in the case of an emergency. The most interesting part of the whole lecture in my opinion was the emergency protocol that CSM has in place. They made it apparent that there must always be a plan explaining that they had a meeting every quarter about a made up scenario that they could practice figuring out a solution to. They then showed us around the emergency room as well as the control room with every CSM ship on a screen and indicators for different zones where there may be pirates or any other issue.
