Magic Movers

Today we started off by going to Medochemie, a large pharmaceutical company located in Limassol. Medochemie specifically produces and manufactures generic drugs. As of right now, they don’t produce any new items however they may plan on expanding and doing so soon. Medochemie explained how they use forecasting during their planning stages and have begun to use blockchain technology as well. One of the things I found particularly interesting was the information about the company’s planning structure. They showed us an in-depth model of how their planning stage goes and how long each part of the stage is repeated. This was interesting to me as I have always been curious how businesses plan certain aspects of their business as it seems so complex. Seeing this model allowed for an in-depth look at each stage and how it is broken up in such a huge company. After our Q and A with the executives, we had a tour of their storage area. Their storage area was cool because it was very high tech with automatic rearranging corridors and forklift operators that can move up and down depending on the level of the shelf that is needed. I’ve never really seen such a high-scale organization system and seeing it makes me wonder the scale of even bigger companies with much more inventory that is stored.

During our pitstop back in the Marina for lunch, I wanted to highlight my food. I got spaghetti octopus which was delicious!

After our lunch break, we went to the Columbia Ship Management Company to see how they run and manage 400+ ships. We saw their Multifunction Room along with the Performance and Optimization Rooms. It was incredible to see how each room had a set purpose that was taken to the max. In one of the rooms, it was a wall of every ship they manage with where it was in live time on the map. In another, they had each ship’s blueprints and it was where they would meet when a ship had an emergency. We learned about their emergency protocol and actually found out that pirates are still a real issue when it comes to shipping today.
