As we will be transitioning into professionals in the workforce within the next year, it is important that we obtain networking skills. Not only will this have a positive effect on our personal careers, but it has the potential to benefit the people around us as well. To educate us on the subject, we were given a lecture today on all things networking by a well-spoken native Dubliner named Rob Cullen. He imparted plenty of helpful techniques to use in the future when attending networking events. For example, he pointed out how to spot an open or closed group at a function, and what to say versus what not to say. As I myself have not attended many networking events yet, I know that I will put these tips to good use. It also did not hurt that he handed out Haribo gummies and Snickers when we answered questions correctly. What I found interesting is that he mentioned that people in this country do not know how to cold call anymore. Not only is this completely different in America as all people do is cold call, but earlier in the trip someone mentioned that you will not have any luck doing business with people by cold calling them. The way that it was explained to me, business conducted in Ireland is rooted in personal connections and that who you know is not of utmost importance, but who knows you. I could see how this could lead to better business in the future and stronger connections being formed.
