5/17 – Networking

Today, we started out the morning with a trip to Griffith college where Rob Cullen gave a presentation about networking. While it was unique because going into it I wasn’t sure what it would be about. I thought though classes and various events we already knew how to network. However, I enjoyed the presenter’s banter with Phil and his energy about the topic. There were also things I ended up learning that I never thought about before. For instance, when you’re wearing a name tag it helps the other person if you have your name tag on the right side of your shirt because its closer to the other person when you shake hands. It is easier for them to remember which is a technique that I will try. Another one I will try is having something/connection from the conversation that makes me and them rememberable. For example, he was talking about liking a soccer team or something simple like that. That way you have something to come back to. He also reiterated the importance how having a presence on LinkedIn because that’s also how people stay up to date and stand out. Another thing is that when you are in a room like the career fair, it’s important to come across as open. Don’t stand there on your phone or act bore because going back to what Ellie mentioned last week, that will be your personal brand. Things that Rob talked about today that are specific to Ireland include: not including a note on LinkedIn better than including one, and how they approach networks. In Ireland, everything is about who you know and those connections and friendships. However, in America there is less of an emphasis of friends as your network. There are different networks for different things like mentors, professional, and social.

After the presentation, we had a 2-hour break where my team and I meet outside to do a practice run of our final presentation about what we learned about GEC after the site tour and how it will be helpful for our final paper. After that, guess where I went back to .. FRESH!! I was so excited to go back because the day before it was absolutely amazing. However, this time I decided to switch it up and make my own bowl from the salad bar. I did a pasta salad, corn. Chickpeas, lettuce, and chicken and of course for dessert the Cadberry mint chocolate bar. Once again, it hit it out of the ballpark. I was fueled up and we delivered our presentation in front of everyone as well as the other groups.

We finished around 3 pm which was perfect because sadly we only have 2 days left, which means it was laundry time. While waiting I ran into Bailey, and we decided to go to this store to pass time. It was literally my happy place and was so zen in there. It had everything, plates, paintings, yarn, stationary things. I walked around with a whole basket, and everything was $26 total. Now, hopefully it all fits in my suitcase. We couldn’t stop there, so we tried the ice cream lab and if you go to Dublin, it’s a must. I got crème Brule ice cream, and they used a torch on top like the real thing. Ice cream is the best. You can have it sweet, fruity, salty, anything. Absolutely amazing.

It sad that tomorrow’s our last day, it flew by!
