Watching Concrete Dry

Today we visited two companies the first was a concrete company and the second SMC. The concrete company was very interesting we had a tour of their plant and had to wear the construction orange vest and hard hats. We got to see the loading process for the cement and clinker. Just recently they purchased two loading machines for each of their materials. The benefit of the new loaders is they produced zero particulate matter into the atmosphere. Which helps make the company more sustainable. In addition to seeing the loading port was got to see the control room for the production aspect of the cement and clinker.  It was very impressive to see how much information they collect for all of the mechanical aspects of the process such as all the information for the furnace.

After our visit, we had a group lunch and got to experience a fish meze. This is a meal where the restaurant brings out large amounts of seafood. We got to try calamari, cuddle fish, whole fish, various forms of crabs, mussels, and many other kinds of seafood. This was a very fun experience since we got to have a wide variety of food.

After lunch, we went to SMC. Another shipping management company. It was very interesting to see that SMC had upward of 500 ships with their fleet and they also have the largest ship in the world. Outside of the fleet, SMC had many methods of monitoring their ships that were similar to the methods CMS used. These were outlined in a prior post about CMS. However, SMC had different methods for improving their sustainability they discussed a little about new forms of energy but rather they focused on how they can reduce energy in their ship designs, the paths the ships take based on currents to help reduce energy, and on land, events to inform the public about helping the environment. The company also told us shipping is the most suitable form of transportation and only accounts for 2.2 percent of the world’s carbon emissions. Overall, we learned a lot about the supply chain here in Cyprus from these two companies specifically how the goods are transported and the importance of devolving a sustainable company even in the smallest ways.
