Today is our last day in Cyprus we got to visit Schulte Shipmanagement Training Center or BSM for our last company visit. We got to see their numerous different training rooms. Some rooms were simulators that had computers students could use to take tests on and listen to lectures. The simulations were very interesting the proctor was able to change many different aspects of the simulation whether the location of the ships, how deep the water is, the weather, or even current patterns from a separate room from where the crew would be performing the tasks. This helps the crew learn how to pilot a ship in many different atmospheres such as basic situations and emergencies. What was also interesting was at the learning sight they also had housing for the students they could live in while learning how to navigate ships that mimicked the sleeping cabins on ships.
After our visit BSM we had our departure meeting with 5 Pitt alumni. It was really interesting getting to talk to each of them and getting to hear their stories. Why they went to Pitt or why they came back to Cyprus? It was also a lot of fun to talk about the research some of them conducted. For example, one of the alumni is currently working on finding a way to prevent cancer cells from metastasizing. And in order to find this cure they had to find how to grow cancerous cells. After dinner, it was time to get ready to leave Cyprus. Overall, I have learned a lot from this trip. Whether it be information about the rich culture and history of Cyprus. Or more modern information regarding the supply chain, blockchain, or cryptocurrency. It was also very beneficial to talk to many different engineers and company owners to see what a future position might look like for students in our field.
