Meeting Nikayla Jones

Choosing my passion

Hello, I am Nikayla Jones. I am a freshman nursing student at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg. I am from Columbus, Ohio, but was raised in the valley area of Pittsburgh, PA. Growing up, I faced many obstacles, and the experiences I had, I aspired to be a nurse. I always wanted to be someone to change the world, I just did not know how and what part of the world I wanted to change. Throughout high school, I have done many things through organizations and clubs such as the National Honors Society, student council, Penn State Talent Search, and more. I also worked various jobs as a dietary aide, and other positions in a medical setting, which gave me motivation to stay in healthcare. Really connecting with my community, and working in a healthcare setting helped me figure out what part of the world I wanted to help change. Realizing how unfair the medical system is, I hoped to become a part of the reason it is more fair. Many factors impact a person’s health, and just the foundation of the healthcare system is one of them. My goal is to eventually become a neuro nurse, open my own travel nurse agency, and educate many individuals coming into the medical field on the importance of health equity in the world. When I am not giving up my life to learn how to save others, I like to draw, spend time with my 3 siblings, and go out to eat.

Plus3 United Kingdom

Plus3 United Kingdom will be an amazing experience, as we will be studying the healthcare and education system in the UK, alongside other Pitt nursing and education students. Many differences between the UK and US healthcare and education systems will be exciting to study. These observations of differences and similarities can further my education on what needs to be taught when trying to improve health equity. I have traveled to Italy before and had an amazing experience, I hope to do the same here and be introduced to the culture of the UK.
