A Warm Welcome to Costa Rica

Just in our brief time exploring Heredia today, I really got a sense of a tightly knit community. I didn’t know what to expect beforehand in that regard, but I immediately saw multiple ways in which Costa Ricans value social connection and togetherness. One thing is the spacing (or lack thereof) between the houses. Most houses stand right next to each other, touching the adjacent houses. From more of a metaphorical standpoint, I think this shows that Ticos value connections with others and prefer to be together as opposed to separate. I also noticed that music is important; there was a band playing outside of the church (pictured above). Once again, a gathering of musicians and people gathering to watch just shows how important community is in Costa Rica.

Another thing I noticed in our exploration was the importance of the mall, both as a mode of shopping and a mode of connecting with others. Whereas us from the United States have shifted to primarily online shopping, Ticos still enjoy a day of shopping at the mall. I think the reason behind this difference is Ticos’ love of socialization and connection. This difference between Costa Rica and the U.S. was something that I hadn’t considered beforehand given that both countries stand on similar socioeconomic level. However, just in the past day, I have really seen an emphasis on community.

Going along with that idea, I have found the people of Costa Rica to be very nice and welcoming. Our host mom, Maria, has already cooked us a delicious breakfast of platacones. These are crushed, fried plantains with some beans and cheese. I felt very welcomed in her home from the start and look forward to learning more Spanish in the coming days! The locals we encountered near the University were nice and fun, showing off some soccer skills when we lost control of the ball! From our pre-trip classes, I got the impression that we would receive this kind welcome to Costa Rica, and my first day here certainly has proven a warm welcome. I look forward to more fun during the rest of the trip!
