As I begin to explore and experience Costa Rica, my first impression is how nature and parks are a major part of the culture. Throughout Heredia, I walked through many beautiful parks. In these areas, many people and animals are gathered. At the Central Park, there is a band playing with many listeners. There is also a church that opens directly to the park. One park had a busy playground for children and a court that could be used both for soccer and basketball. Each park was packed with families and people. This importance on keeping nature and trees sacred, and Costa Ricans using these areas to gather really sticks out to me.

Before I traveled to Costa Rica, I had learned that Costa Rica has preserved 30% of their forests through national parks. Therefore, I had expected at least the Costa Rican government to prioritize these natural habitats. However, I had not anticipated for so many people in Costa Rica to also really appreciate and value nature. In the parks, many pigeons, clay-colored thrush birds, and parakeets were living harmoniously with humans visiting the area. This blend and mutual acceptance between the people and animals was impactful.

Furthermore, the large crowd and shoppers at Heredia’s mall was shocking to me. I did not anticipate for such a large amount of people to be there. There was also a large display for May 4th, Star Wars Day. In the United States, malls have become almost obsolete with people doing the majority of their shopping online. Yet, in Costa Rica, online shopping does not have as much as a presence, and malls are still a major shopping and meeting place for people to gather. Overall, my first day in Heredia has been wonderful, and I look forward to learning more about the culture and way of life in Costa Rica in the next days.
