After a 1 hour flight to Chicago, 4 hour layover, and 9 hour flight, we finally arrived in Germany! Due to the 6-hour time difference, it was 10 am when we arrived in Germany, but 4 am back home. Needless to say, we were all very tired!
When we got to Augsburg, we did a quick walking tour before we could check-in to our hotel. Just from this short walk, I noticed how different their city center was structured compared to Pittsburgh. There were a lot of trams and buses as well as people biking. There were also cobblestone streets were cars were not allowed, as well as some that were so tiny I was surprised cars were allowed on!
We also did a tour of the Fuggerei, the world’s first social housing. It was built by Jakob Fugger in the 16th century, and is still in use today.

We were blessed by clear skies for the majority of this tour, but as soon as we left it started to rain. We had to stop to stand under a cafe’s umbrellas on our walk to dinner. It didn’t last too long thankfully and we were on our way.

At dinner, we met with our German student counterparts from the University of Augsburg. I tried ordering a bit in German, as broken as it is! I tried turkey schnitzel for the first time. It was very good! I think I want to try pork schnitzel as well while I’m here. After dinner, we went back to the hotel and I fell asleep almost immediately. Traveling is tiring!
