A Salt Water Filled Day

Our first stop today was a mosque in Larnaca called Hala Sultan Tekke! The drive there was very beautiful and we got to learn about Neolithic people in Cyprus on the way to the site. Once we got to the mosque, I had some difficulties with the dress code but luckily was able to go in! This mosque is home to the tomb of Umm Haram and is thought of as the third holiest place for Muslims across the world! It is situated next to a salt lake and we got a glimpse of flamingos as we left.

After Hala Sultan Tekke, we went to the Greek Orthodox St. Lazarus Church. This is said to hold the tomb of Lazarus, who was said to have been raised from the dead by Jesus. This church was home to many beautiful icons with intricate gold frames. It was interesting to learn about the gold plating that was placed over an icon to protect the portrait from people kissing it over the years.

We ended our day in Larnaca at the beach! They had chairs and umbrellas we could rent and it was a great way to spend time with everyone on our Plus3 trip! The water was very warm, clear, and calm—we could swim so far out! I ordered a chicken kebab for lunch and enjoyed it on the beach. After the beach, we got to do some shopping in the cutest souvenir shop! I really enjoyed the small beach town feel of Larnaca and had a great day!
